Under Armour Advertisement featuring Gisele Bündchen

YouTube Advertisements have been stepping up their game. I saw this Under Armour one last week and could not seem to push the “skip” button, I was instantly captivated. The ad features global sensation and top model Gisele Bundchen sparing with a hanging sandbag wearing Under Armour gear. Behind her flash negative comments, criticisms, and different hurtfull messages. The comments flash instantly and you don’t really get a chance to read them, which I think was part of the point to prove that there is so much “talk” and “comments” thrown at these figures everyday it starts to blurr. However Gisele did a great job portraying emotion and the pain is clear in her eyes. I know I would be affected if those words were directed at me. Watch the ad below:

The backstory behind the ad is that Under Armour  wanted to show a new side of Gisele,”the unguarded, raw, real and brave side that shows what it’s like living in the public eye,” said Droga5 creative director John McKelvey. “To the world, most people have only seen her in a context of beauty and polish. But when we came to Gisele with the idea, she embraced the truth of the concept and its potential to be a positive message. The campaign shows all the contradicting opinions she is constantly exposed to and the focus and determination it takes to tune out the noise and will what she wants.”(Ad Week)

Something interesting about this ad is that This is Under Armour’s first non-athlete spokesperson.  Under Armour reports that there was indeed conflict with this decision”We are expecting that there will be people that question the authenticity of our choice and the authenticity of women’s choices,” Under Armour’s SVP and creative director of Women’s Leanne Fremar told The Cut.  (Mashable)

I was pleasantly surprised, then amazed to see a Victoria Secret angel being so fierce and tough. Adweek describes it perfectly “Forget designer gowns. This is the Brazilian supermodel like you’ve never seen her before. With her fists wrapped like a boxer, she’s athletic, fierce and formidable. She throws powerful roundhouse kicks and punches at a heavy bag. She looks like she’s training for the UFC, not Fashion Week.” (AdWeek) Fabulous and Fierce another strong Ad.

What’s Cooking #5- Almond Milk + Tomatillo Poblano Cream Sauce

Mini Meatloafs + Roasted Green Beans and Potatoes

Mini Meatloaves with Green Beans & Potatoes Recipe

I love finding new recipes to try-I hardly ever make the same thing twice. Usually I get my recipes online from food blogs or food websites, but sometimes I will find a recipe from a magazine or cookbook. Eating Well Magazine has been my new favorite-I really enjoy the in-depth articles about food related issues such as GMO’s or the difference between the many types of oils. A bonus is that that all of their recipes are healthy and list the calories, protein, carbs, ect. In the most recent Issue, the magazine had a section on “Cookie Sheet” dinners- where everything can be baked on a cookie sheet, including these mini meatloafs. I always thought that meatloaf was gross , especially the ones with massive amounts of ketchup. It reminds me of the 1920’s and the outdated housewife era. Eating Well updated the recipe making cute portion sized rounds flavored with worcestershire sauce and Italian seasoning. The meat turned out perfectly, and served along side garlic-paprika roasted veggies made a exciting dinner. Here is the recipe

Tomatillo Poblano Cream Sauce Grilled Chicken

The grill never tasted so good with this Grilled Chicken withTomatillo Roasted Poblano Cream Sauce | www.joyfulhealthyeats.com #glutenfree

One of my favorite parts of the farmers market is to see what is new in season for the week. Blueberries are now long gone and instead tomatoes, potatoes, and melons are in the peak of their season. A couple of weeks ago tomatillos were all the rage. When I saw them, I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do with them, but decided to figure that part out later. After making this  Tomatillo Poblano Cream Sauce Grilled Chicken recipe, I was hooked and went back the next week to buy more-only to discover that sadly they were gone. To me tomatillo’s taste more like a fruit than a vegetable-kind of like an apple. Their intense flavor is crisp, sweet, and tart. This recipe called for them to be grilled and then pureed with a roasted poblano pepper, lemon juice, and yogurt. Served over grilled chicken it was a perfect summer meal. Click Here for the Recipe. This sauce was also great on salads, as a dip for chips, and a dressing for wraps as well! (Image via Joyful Healthy eats)

Tropical Carrot Blend Trader Joes

When my Dad was visiting me, he picked up this tropical carrot juice blend for me to try. Normally, I would never buy a carrot juice but surprisingly I enjoy this one. It does not taste like carrot but more of a tropical fruit juice. It is refreshing and I usually enjoy it with my morning oatmeal or in a smoothie. I have found that I enjoy a lot of Trader Joe’s beverages and will continue to buy more.

No Bake Penut Butter Protein Bars

As I mentioned in my last post, I made my own protein bars via a recipe from OH She Glows. They were super quick to make and are not only healthy but very yummy.  I have been enjoying them for my mid-morning snack every day at work. I love the sweet peanut butter taste and the consistency is very smooth. I feel full after eating one and also know I am putting natural ingredients into my body, which makes me feel good. I am planning on making them again this weekend! I highly recommend giving these bars a try. The only change is that I used Oat flour instead of grinding my own oats since I do not own a food processor.

Almond Milk

I am becoming a breakfast girl. I used to dislike breakfast, mainly because I didn’t eat eggs. Some of my favorite breakfast foods include veggie omelets, oatmeal, overnight oats, smoothies, and pancakes on the weekends.  However Cereal will continue to trump all of these breakfast foods.. It sound very unglamorous but cereal is one of my favorites. For the month of September I am trying not to drink milk. I read an article online that suggested dairy can be linked to bad skin. Instead of giving up all dairy products at once I giving it up little by little to see if I see a change. I absolutely love cheese and yogurt so I am not sure how that will work-but for now I am drinking Almond Milk. It doesn’t taste as good as regular milk, but I think I just need to find a brand that I like.

Easy Snack Ideas + Homemade Protein Bars

Snacks are an essential part of my day. I get hungry between meals and find that snacks are just as important as my breakfast or dinner. It is very easy to eat unhealthy snacks, so I am always on the hunt to find  quick and easy snacks. My ideal snack fits in a sandwich size zip lock bag and requires minimal effort-grab and go!  Here are a couple of snacks that I have found help keep me full and satisfied throughout the day.

Protein Bars

Granola, chewy, crunchy, protein or energy bars are the epitome of an ideal snack. My favorite store-bought bars are fiber one bars and the nature valley oats and honey granola bars. However last week I decided to make my own protein bars on a suggestion from a co-worker. Making your own protein bars is a cheaper and better tasting alternative then the processed ones in the supermarket.  It sounds like a lot of work but the recipe by Oh She Glows  takes 10 minutes or less. The most difficult part was going to the store and buying the ingredients-they are that easy! I store the bars in the freezer pre-cut so that I can just grab one before I head off to work in the morning. Cant wait to try more recipes!

Cheese and Crackers

I am not even ashamed to admit that my mom packed my lunch until I was 18 years old, it was the greatest. However peanut butter and jelly sandwiches get old after 16 plus years-so my mom started packing me turkey, crackers, and cheese instead. I have adopted this high-school lunch for a snack in between classes.  One of my favorite crackers is the Trader Joe Multigrain crackers with soy and I usually eat them with any type of white cheddar cheese or goat cheese. Quick and easy a little bit of cheese never hurts!

Eating your fruits and vegetables is a given, but often I find I eat way more vegetables than fruit. Taking fruit for lunch helps reassure I get my four servings of fruits and veggies a day.Healthy and delicious. This summer I have been loving any sort of melons, nectarines, and blueberries. I like to switch up different fruits every week so I that I do not get bored eating the same one day after day. I don’t worry about the calories each fruit, but if you are interested this article is a great overall comparison.

Nuts or Trail mix

When i am craving something salty or crunchy, nuts or a trail mix is usually what I grab. I love pecans, but because of the price I usually buy unsalted almonds! Recently I have enjoyed snacking on Trader Joe’s Wasabi WOW trail mix. It has golden and regular raisins, wasabi peas, peanuts and almonds! Eating Well Magazine says that “Nuts are chock-full of vitamins, minerals, heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and low levels of saturated fats. Research suggests that people who eat nuts—walnuts, pecans, almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios, pine nuts and peanuts (which actually are legumes)—two to four days or more per week have a lower incidence of heart disease than people who eat them less often.”

Hummus and Carrots

Hummus is something I could eat everyday. It is the perfect creamy snack. Whether with pita chips, veggies, or even layered in a wrap- I find multiple uses for hummus. It is very easy to make your own, but also can be fun to try different weird flavors from different brands at the store. This article appropriately titled “Beyond Roasted Red Pepper” lists weird hummus flavors including jalapeno honey.
